1. I love that show !!!
Stargate SG1, The other night when it played, they had the coolest thing. They always have references to other scifi series. Like, asking if we could name the ship "enterprise", or saying shit like "we macgyvered a connection between the dhd and the stargate" But, last night was the coolest! Carter was humming cuz she was happy... she was humming the theme to stargatesg1!!!

  • did you notice how my post to another thread ended up on here? wierd. -whyme
  • I too, love SG1. Its one of the reasons I requested mondays off (so I could watch when the scifi channel plays 4 episodes in a row!) -Bobsentme
  • One of my favorites as well... -hkypipe
  • It's just sliders in uniforms, imoho -RTFM
  • Sliders was cool for the first few seasons, then they killed the professer, and it went down hill. -MrThou
  • Sci-Fi Channel rox! When I got cable tv hooked back up to my apartment, I went ahead and got a PVR so I dont miss anything. between Sci-Fi channel and L&O (all 3 variations), I've come close to the 50hr limit many times. -firebird2k2
  • Stargate is my favorite TV show! It's SciFi but has some nice archealogical/historical bits, Carter gets to be an intelligent & competent female w/o being butch, O'Neill is sarcastic & flippant, etc. Well written & engaging. Never did get into Sliders, tho. -Tekkie
  • Yeah, with the cancellation of FarScape, it is the closest thing to "space based" SciFi on that channel. (Keep your eyes open for the FarScape mini-series now in production.) -Captain Trips
  • Speaking of FarScape...I can't believe SciFi cancelled that and shows this far inferior show. Got tired of SG1 after the 1st season on Showtime. Lame. Maybe SciFi eps are better, I dunno. -ParkNuts
  • Love Stargate SG-1, but each season after the first is kind of disappointing. But not so disappointing that I'm not buying the DVDs! Just finished watching the 5th season and waiting for 6. Unfortunately, I can't get cable. -sassicatz
  • <men on film> Sliders. Hated it! So I returned to Greece...I mean Stargate! </men on film> -pennywithahole

  • 2. Engrish I speak her good
And this was someone who spoke quite clearly, no trace of an accent or a stutter or anything. Clear, enunciated madness.

ME: "What time of day is best to call you back?"
SF: "Could you get this done tomorrow and call me back Monday?"
ME: "It's very likely they'll do this tomorrow, but I'm not certain. What time of day is best to call you back?"
    SF: "Monday or Tuesday."
ME: "What time - of - day is best to call you back at?"
SF: "Oh ... in the mornings."

  • My workplace is pretty strict about Windows licenses, actually... found out I had to format my XP machine to install ME a while ago, as it was the only available license. It's annoying to have to reboot "just 'cause" so often, on what is otherwise stable hardware. -namor
  • I only have Me at work because it came with the MSDN subscription. The only time it came out of the box is when I inherited the subscription and sorted it all out. -LaserGuru

  • I agree with Riff. I will run Win98se as long as I possibly can. If I were forced to upgrade though it would be win2k. ME and XP blow ass. -Dcadiman
  • i actually had to upgrade recently to xp. there's talk of me possibly going to back to tech so i thought i'd familiarize myself. w/ everything on, it runs ok w/ 256. admittedly i'm running on 1536 now, but i don't recomend the lusers run it w/o 512 minimum. -omegawolf

  • Malignant Edition, Malfunction Edition, Mangled Edition ..... -Flexo

  • 4. Fishies get everywhere!!
Ok, so I know there endemic to the world but sometimes y aget one that just takes the cake :) SO, other day I was waiting in the hospitals X-ray department with my housemate, so her little boy can have a chest x-ray, and to get to the waiting area you first have to go through the main x-ray reception, where you get pointed in right direction, and this old couple comes doddering down the corridor, and hand the nurse in the waiting are their card, nurse checks it, then looks at the couple & tells them that the department they need is upstiars, on the next level. To which, said fishies respond with "Oh we know, we just didnt want to go up the stairs or use the lift".... My housemate hadda stop me turning round & saying something to these particularly fine examples of seafood.... They just get everywhere *sobs*

I'm gonna milk my license for all it's worth and reign hell down upon all of the youngsters! And I'm going to truly, truly enjoy it!!! -dobbin

  • i guess some people really got pissed. i don't think the fact that i called them hicks helped any, even if it does apply. -whyme
  • No need to appologize. I am impressed that the flames didn't get more out of control. Good job, fellow TSCers. Mighty impressive. -obie099
  • That's funny...I just saw a rerun Simpsons where Skinner said he just got banned the word "evolution" from curriculum! -billybien
  • I don't think anybody really got pissed. I don't appreciate being called a hick or a redneck or whatever simply because I don't agree with the general sentiment. Am I some bible-thumping brainwashed fundamentalist christian? I don't think so. Do I believe that creation is a more valid theory than evolution? No. I actually think that both have their points. I do appreciate that other people might think differently? Of course. You just have to understand that the techs that post here come from many different upbringings and are at different points in their life. What may seem dumb and close-minded to you at 18-20 might look different at 30+. Whatever. In any case, for the record, I just think that schools should teach evolution as the theory that it is instead of as established fact. Too many teachers teach it as the only possible explanation and I think that is wrong. Also, for the record, that official in Georgia was an asshat for suggesting that the word 'evolution' was the problem and thinking just changing what we call it would make any difference at all. -scooby111
  • first, i'm older than 18-20. second, though redneck may not apply, hick does. look it up. third, separation of religion and state. fourth, this already went to court and they made a movie about it. fifth, fuck it, it's not worth it. -whyme
  • Theory and fact are not mutually exclusive. The theory of evolution is the scientific explanation of the observed fact of evolution. If we want the US to continue to lead the world in science we have to nip this misunderstanding in the bud. -thx1138
  • First of all, I agree with the one official who compared taking out the word 'evolution' with teaching gravity w/o using the word 'gravity.' Actually though, the whole thing about "separation of church and state" is misunderstood by and large. Those three words never even appear in the constitution, yet people act like it would be unconstitutional to teach things like creation, even if no specific religion and no specific supernatural deity is referenced. -kman52000
  • I have studied the evolution of religions, work that one out. ps I am not a god follower myself. But I have seen examples of the theory of evolution proved (the gene for scales to feathers for example, but never seen any gods, funny that. You'ed think with so meny religions about you might bump into one or two). -strider

  • 11. Groundhog Day came a day early
Customer calls in because his install CD gave an error message, stating it's incompatible with the language that his computer is set to. Oh wonderful. Never heard of that one.

So I try to go through a manual registration; not a big deal, but first I have to determine what his IP address is, if it's on the internal network before authentication or not.

ME: "Click on Start, then Run, and type in WINIPCFG."
SF: "Okay, click on Start, then what?"
    ME: "Run."
    SF: "Then type in what?"
    ME: "WINIPCFG."
SF: "Okay, let me turn on my computer first."
ME: "Do you have a pen so you can write this down?"
SF: "Just wait a second, it's loading now."
ME: "Let me know when you get to the desktop, because it's going to be sort of pointless otherwise."
SF: "Which computer should I use?"
    ME: "It doesn't matter."
SF: "My other one has XP on it."
ME: "This one will be fine for now."
SF: "These are behind a router. Is that okay?"
ME: "No, the modem has to be connected directly to the PC at first, then you can register the router later."
SF: "Okay, it's loaded. Click on what?"

Needless to say... this call was 14 minutes of the same, trying to get to the internal authentication site to register his PC's MAC address. Upon trying to use the other computer, however, the call got disconnected. Oh, woe. I think I need to be loaded.

So, I'm sitting here watching the halftime show, 730ish pm on Sunday evening. I figure there are probably a lot of kids watching too.

Everything going ok. They have some singers, they have a University band, seems like a decent show, although not my taste in music. The grand finale? Oh, nothing much, just Justin Timberlake ripping off what looks like a cutaway part of Janet Jackson's bustier. Revealing her gravity drained tit.
Now, number 1, this isn't really good stuff for 730 on a sunday night. Number 2, she could have picked a time to do this during the time in her life when her tits weren't sagging.

  • 15. I have what?
When I was working for G-way, I took a call from a very angry guy, and he was justified. He had called earlier and was unable to follow directions, so the agent referred him to Mcafee for an update against the IDtenT virus. This guy was foaming at the mouth. I am not sure how the Mcafee agent explained it to him, but it did not create happy thoughts. I was on the call for over an hour trying to calm the guy down. I wanted to both shake the original agents hand (for having the testicular fortitude) and strangle him.

  • 16. I'm not Dead Yet! pt 1

Ho hum another Monday morning, with its usual start to the day. un an HR report on people who left the previous week, and lock any accounts which we hadn’t already been told about.

Two hours later answer my phone to find a Starfish on the other end, blathering on to someone beside him, and not noticing I’ve answered with my “Ghostbusters, whaddya want?” tone of voice.(note for reasons that will be clear later, I was half expecting this call)

SF… and it’s too soon, I mean shit, what’s that all about?
    Me: What’s what all about?
SF: Oh yeah um right, yeah (sound of trying to find a clue). Um Hi, it’s Fishy here, umm, my account’s locked out and I need to like fix my time sheet
Me: Fishy? I have your HR record showing that you left us last week, so your accounts have been locked, pending deletion.
SF: Well yeah, I’ve left but I’m here now and need to FIX my time sheet
Me (playing ignorant, difficult but I managed): What do you mean you’ve left but you’re here? Have you come back? Was the HR record wrong?
SF : No, no it’s not wrong, I left but I came back in today with Luser (another SF) so I could FIX my time sheet
Me: Well if you’ve left, you have no rights in any system and an administrator will have to fix up your time sheet. Your former Team leader can sort this out for you.

    17. I'm not Dead Yet! pt 2
    ...

SF (sounding panicky)No, you don’t get it I HAVE TO FIX MY TIME SHEET! Shit, look I put some notes about some of the projects in there and they might not be right
Me: I’m sorry but only a time sheet admin can fix someone else’s time sheet, oh I see that ToughSod was you former TL, I’ll transfer you now. Click!

Last Friday I overheard ToughSod talking to my boss about a certain SF that left in a somewhat inebriated state on his last day and that this SF had in a gesture of drunken stupidity put massive amounts of overtime claims with notes referring to a serious of physical acts his boss could undertake. The dawning horror on the SF’s face as he sobered up must have been a delight to see.

In this case the SF was a right prick and people were pleased to see him leave, so seeing him hoist on his on petard was a pleasure.

  • That price isn't even bad ... And though there's a lot of bad stuff to be said about Russians, their equipment is usually pretty robust. Just look at how long Mir really lasted. -Calydor
  • Yep, and maintenance costs for the first year will cost almost as much as the plane. -scooby111
  • Yeah... and it's a jet... that obtains jet speeds. Sort of like saying you're a walker that obtains walking speeds, isn't it? (Besides, I wanted the sub for sale on eBay a few years back.) -outofcoffee
  • cool i could fly it between maine and new jersey -postal tech

  • 19. Curious
I know there is a forum, and had a really good tip/idea for neuman on his business. Is there any special sign ups/credit/memberships needed to post to the forums? I see most of the member base listed, and can normlly post such as here. Yet my username and pass aren't accepted for forums. Any suggestions? Oh and on the business... Make sure to have atleast one table with nothing but a router, mouse, keyboard, monitor, hub, and cat5 cables. A lot of those games people bring in work great on their systems. I know I hate having to setup software on a machine just to play the game when I want to. Or, if my save game from the lan game even exists. So dont forget burners on atleast one systems per bunch for making saves of screen shots, game saves, etc.

  • Remember that, in UNIX, the username and password are case-sensitive. Make sure you're using 'MaskedMarauder' and not 'maskedmarauder' etc. -scooby111
  • Nevermind, I lied. Username isn't, but password is. -scooby111
  • Scoob, userid *is*, for me at least...If not capitalized correctly (both), then the login fails. -CTYankee
  • My username and password is always "rejected" and I can get into the forums anyway... -bracketmonkey
  • Interesting. I wonder if it's browser dependent. I use firebird, but IE also lets me in regardless of case in the username. I seem to remember that it was case-sensitive. I used to use Mozilla. Anyone with a non-firebird mozilla that can confirm? -scooby111
  • I cannot log into TSC using "mrthou" username can be case sensitive -MrThou
  • This had me fooled for ages. If you (or if I , anyway) click Members Area (and enter name/password if required). Then click Message Board. You then get a screen with a big Enter Name / Enter Password box across it. No matter what you put in there it won't work. Just ignore it . Click Forum Index (up above the Name-password box area). And bingo- you're in the forum, all logged in . Took me ages to figure that out (Definately is thus, I just tried it now) -jedidiahstott

  • 20. Worst. EU. Ever. Part 3
Eventually one of the vice presidents gets involved and asked me what was going on. I told him everything and other people backed me up on how insane this guy was, barraging us with e-mails, voicemails, and calls. He's was really pissed me off. Just to shut the guy up, he decided to get one of the techs to speak to the guy to tell and e-mail him the account info. So the other tech had his own wonderful starfish experience that probably wasn't much better than my own. I didn't like that for two reasons. First, it makes me look like an asshole like I could have done that from the beginning when in reality I would have gotten in BIG trouble. Second, it confirms in this guy's head that he can get around the rules and do what he wants by bitching and screaming and threatening people. I just hope no one around he expects me to speak to that asshole again. I also wonder how smart it is to threaten someone with access to your personal information...

  • Oops, looks like I'm still a little heated about it. "He's was really pissed me off." should read "Here's what really pissed me off." -letsgoflyers81
  • That is harsh. Your not the a-hole here, you were following your guidelines. If the other tech has a problem with that, direct him to your sup, and state now that this could snowball into bigger issues as other people will do the same. -Bunglehawk069
  • i absolutely despise when customers make a big deal about a rule, and i have to hold firm, because i'm the asshole who gets fired for giving in... but a supervisor can choose to override me and break the rule for this person to shut them up. It completely destroys my credibility and teaches them that whining gets things done -battybeyond
  • Just my $0.02 - There is a sign at a construction site I go by every morning that reads "Where there is a rule there is a reason". -RedSwingline
  • I echo battybeyond's comment completely! That's happened to me way too many times -grahamwboyes
  • Holy fark. If it weren't for the fact that your bio says you're in PA, I'd swear you work for us. We have almost exactly the same rules. This waste-of-oxygen needs to be taken out back and pounded into the pavement. http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/dilbert-20040121.html -scooby111
  • I once worked for the Federal Govt, in an agency that ahd a lot of problems with sexual descrimination, hostile work environment, cronyism, and "Managers" with the authority to bypass rules. I learned long ago to document this stuff. Start a Journal. Keep a copy at home. If stuff like this come back to haunt you, you will have recorded the date and circumstances. -CyBear
  • I want to just say that its people like you who post the PART 1, 2, and 3 in the correct order when click next story, make reading this worth while -LowLevelFormat
  • LLF Johnson is right!</blazing saddles> -Bioguy
  • My 2¢ as well. I would approach the VP that arranged the call back and ask him a very pertinent question: Is it a policy, or a FARKIN' guideline??? The luser was your typical "wally" [suffers from the aforementioned "wal-mart" syndrome]. Should have told him "Call whine one one". -ledhed
  • Oh GOD. This sounds like the asshole we get on our phones telling us how smart and technically superior he is from us, but STILL CALLS US! And then he bitches at us forever about how screwed up our company is. If your guy owns a tattoo parlor in southeast Ohio...we may have the same jerk. -techiegoddess
  • Had a similar issue here, guy called in and spoke to every sup here and 12 dif techs. The nice thing is that the sup's backed up every tech and never gave in -lvl1
  • "Since you've threatened to come here looking for me, I'm obligated to report you to the local authorities. Have a nice day, and choke on it, you stupid motherfucker." -teivrann
  • What an asshole. Cant believe the rules where bypassed for someone like that. Makes me wanna start being a dick... Nah, One of you would come hunt me down :p -MrThou
  • When ANYTHING happens that's even questionable, I e-mail it to my sup as a "heads up", and cc myself on it. And since it's internal e-mail which could "disappear" anytime convenient, I dump it off to my home e-mail account. Probably never need it, but a printed copy of things like that could go a long way towards a very nice severance package if you ever get termed. -Ticketman
  • We went to puppy training last night, and the same rules apply: If it's barking at you, ignore it until it stops barking, otherwise it learns that barking persistantly gets it what it wants. -Sadu
