1. Fucking PHB

So, begin our story clear back at the beginning of 2010, when I am tasked with finding Project Management software for Peyton Place to implement. Of course, at the top of the list is Microsoft Project.

I manage to locate and implement a 100% free open source PM application that runs beautifully on our web server. I let everyone know it's there and how to log in. This is mid-year by this point.

Months go by, and nobody uses the software. I beg. I cajole. I plead. I threaten bodily injury. The software goes unused.

Finally, just a few weeks ago, I uninstall it.

Anybody want to guess what happens next?

Fucking PHB sends out an e-mail - to everyone except me - giving them a link to this nifty new project management software he's found, and telling people to evaluate it.

It's not free. And it involves hosting corporate data on servers I have absolutely no control over.

Now it's time to play the "How to Piss Off Your Network Admin In One Easy Step" game.

  • Uh, say there Riff, hasn't he already started? Here's to you catching up- with a cluebat. -LDFeral
  • Reinstall the software and make sure it works, then send out an all-hands telling them that there's already a PM package in place, has been in place, and works...and make sure to copy one of your earlier e-mails to remind folks it's not a new concept. *grin* -Grue
  • I second Grue on this...and include the cost / benefit difference. <evil grin> -CTYankee
  • I suggest you call the open source software a "free version of the software the phb found". That'll work. Guaranteed. -momo

  • Wait, why do we have to control the fist of death again? I keep forgetting. I know, it's the lack of space to dispose of the bodies, right? -TechMama

  • 5. Yes, Virginia, There Is A Karma Goddess
A little backfill here: In mid-August, a job posting was placed on the internal employment website in the company I work for. The job was to do executive level support at a facility in Houston, Texas (a rather large one that's attached to something called the Johnson Space Center.) Having gotten tired of dealing with the mismanglement at my current place of employment (same company), I applied for the position. Fast forward now to the end of October, when I was finally interviewed for this position. I go through the interview, dazzle them with my expertise... and then it's as if a cone of silence was dropped. Not one word, not a hint as to what was going on. Granted, the fact that it took two months just to finally get around and interview people should have given me a hint, but... fast forward to this afternoon. An email arrives from someone I've not met, and is a secure message. I open it up... and lo and behold, I've been given an offer for the position. It took me about... five seconds before I was already responding back with my accepting of the position. It meant a promotion to a higher level, and a pay increase of roughly 25% above what I'm getting now. So Happy Hanukkah to me (no, I'm not Jewish)/early Yule present. So yes, Virginia, there is a karma goddess.

  • MBR rewrite will fix it if you have default partition setup. The key is the partition table; you have to replace that exactly as it was. -chazz
  • I used a tool many years ago which could scan the drive and, from filesystem metadata, could figure out where the partitions were. I managed to recover most of the data from a rapidly dying 10GB drive with that help. (The manufacturer replaced it with a 20GB unit.) -Chromatix

  • Heh. CommanderData has one of those, but it was made MUCH better than that one. The 10m cords were done in a 10-strand braid for a long handle, then black-taped. One end was passed through the handle and looped for a hanger, then all ten ends were tested * match-labeled. I made it & brought it to NJBBQ years ago, NightRain accepted it for transport and relayed it to CD and Fuzzyom as a wedding present from the bunch of us there. It appeared to go over well, especially considering the "tails" are twice longer than her height! *grin* -Grue

So one of the people I support comes up to me at work on Friday. "Hey, Anne, do you order computer supplies?"

Me, sensing trouble in the wind: "Yeah. What do you need?"

Him: "Well, it would be really great for my work if I had the ability to scroll left and right the way I do up and down..."

Yes, you guessed it. He wants a new mouse. Is it wrong of me not to have looked very hard before I told him we don't have any?

  • 15. doublestupid
The woman next to me was on this call for two hours. Afterwards she told me what was up, and here's just a snippet:

A woman went into an AnusMark store to make a payment on her ConHugeCo cell phone bill, and the AnusMark employee applied the money to a nonexistant ConHugeCo landline account. We're not sure how the person did this since the cell accounts and landline accounts have entirely different account numbering schemes. But that's part one. Part two is that the AnusMark store assistant manager said he'd fix things by saying nevermind to the mistaken payment and making another payment drawn out of store funds.... to the nonexistant landline account, oopsie.

Some errors are really hard to make, but they managed to make it twice. I'm told that the assistant manager's supervisor came on the line and blamed... the ConHugeCo cell phone people who have been standing back going "huh? wtf?" for everything that has gone wrong. Different breed of stupid on that.

  • 16. It happens to all of us...

I have the beginnings of unilateral bursitis ("mouse shoulder"), so I can't use a standard mouse for very long. Instead, I have trackballs, one at home, one at work, and very nice they are -- been using them for fifteen years or so. Kensington figured out how to make solid hardware...

Problem is, they stopped driver development years and years ago, and the drivers have recently started showing a fault: many installers, querying the mouse, send a NULL as part of the request, and the program fails with an access violation in KMW_DLL.DLL.

As long as it was only the Thunderbird and Firefox updaters doing it, I was OK with it; they didn't update terribly frequently, and always with warnings, so I could uninstall the mouse driver, stick a generic mouse onto the machine, and do the install that way... but my new phone's installer also chokes. As do several other things that I want to use. I suspect that the problem is actually deep inside Microsoft's MSI handler, and it shows in everything's installer because they're all using that handler. Microsoft being as unhelpful as they are, my only choice is to dump this perfectly functional hardware...

    so...

    ...I want a...

  • Meh - I'd keep the hardware and dump the o/s. *grin* -Grue
  • Just a stupid thought - I keep a mouse plugged in AS WELL as the serial track pad my client loves. -Divinar
  • Grue: AFAIK, even Linux has limited support for 15-year-old hardware, and trackballs may be even more limited than that. Divinar: it GPFs if the Kensington driver is loaded, even if the trackball is unplugged; a second mouse alongside doesn't help. -chazz
  • Sounds like you need that new air-operated pointing device that's not as dependent on the electrical signaling... Yes, "you want a Pneu-Mouse"! *ya'll excuse me while I run for my life. Is the LART shelter taking reservations? I hope I don't get stuck with the table near the kitchen door!* -Voz
  • Unilateral bursitis, better than multilateral burrkiss! -evolvedstarfish
  • What about a theremin mouse? -Wraith556
  • Is this http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/devices/7365 not a viable alternative? -Stryker One
  • "With up to 18 months of use from a single AA, you might just forget your trackball uses batteries at all"... Riiiight -Grembo
  • I've found the best way to counter stupid is with stupid. Just hook the trackball up to an old computer, and use Synergy or VLC to control the computer you actually want to use. -rtfma
  • Stryker1: I've tried mice that shape, and while they are usable, I find that the smaller ball, with only the thumb to control it, doesn't give me the amount of control I like. Kensington is still making a full-size ball, likely I'll pick up a couple of those. rtfma: a possibility, but I've found remote control applications to be laggy, also reducing my mouse control. Granted, VNC is better than most that way... -chazz
  • Does the mouse driver "see" the Kensington trackball at all? I had an old Logitech trackball that would pretend to be a MS Intellimouse (This was under W2K) -Divinar
  • Divinar: Yes; without the driver, it appears as a standard two-button MS mouse... but the acceleration curve is off and the speed can't be cranked up high enough in XP. (It's better in Win7, but still not great.) -chazz
  • I like the Kensington Orbitals, and they're cheap enough to replace when the cat steals them. AND they're supported in modern operating systems. -pixel
  • How about this http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/devices/189 instead then? -Stryker One
  • nice Stryker...graphics tablet/pen is another alternative for relief of mouse shoulder -stiffarm
  • StrykerOne: I'm currently pricing this http://ca.kensington.com/html/8966.html which is the latest version of what I was using until now. What you've suggested is reasonable, but might take some training; I've used it (my accountant's assistant has one) and find that it's still a different set of motions than I'm used to and I keep hitting buttons I don't mean to. I'm used to the Kensington, and if it's not too horribly expensive, I may stick with it... though the Wacom Bamboo also looks pretty nice. -chazz
  • Have you looked at the Logiteck Trackball? I use it and like it a lot. It is not a thumb ball, ball is on top and you use your index / middle finger. -Source

I don't work in tech support (I'm an administrator at a school district, and beyond that, a graphic designer). But, I have one "client" whom I help out with computer issues from time to time (she's the ex-girlfriend of the neighbor of the house my mother-in-law used to live in...um, yeah). Anyway, she called, and I went over to fix her 2 computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop). Problem 1&2: icons and text too small on both computers (shes elderly, and has bad eyes). Easily fixed. Problem 3&4: neither computer would get online. Clicked her AOL (ugh!) shortcut on the desktop, and connected fine. Rebooted dsl modem (connected to the laptop), and was able to connect there also. Time spent: about an hour, and now I have a bit of pocket money. :)

  • 20. That'll buy 100 tacos!

That particular week, a week I am happy to say was quite some time ago, RetailComputerStore offered a laptop for sale. The price was, if I remember correctly, $599. The sale price was $599, but in addition, we threw in a $100 gift card. Some lady came in, bought the laptop, and as was sometimes the case, the computer didn't distribute the promotion correctly.

"All right, give me a minute here. I'm trying to correct something... the computer is ringing up your computer, but it's not registering your free gift card."

    "Well, I want that!"

"Right, right. Yeah, I'm not sure why it's doing this, but I'll work it out."

It takes me another 10 minutes of re-keying the promotion. I eventually decide that someone at corporate screwed up, which was often the case, and decided it was no longer worth my time to try and fix.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry about that. Thanks for waiting. I can't get this promotion to go through, so I tell you what I'm going to do... I'll just take what would have been the value of that card right off the price of the computer. You can call it an 'instant discount'."

    "Oh, well, thank you!"

"Okay, so your total is going to be $499."

"Right. Where's my free gift card?"

"Ma'am... we're not going to need to give you a gift card. Instead of giving you the card, we're taking the money right off the top."

    "Right!"

"So... that'll be $499, plus tax."

"But it says here I get a gift card!"

"...Yes, but we're having trouble with that promotion, so I'm giving you something better. Instead of charging you all that money, and giving you a gift card, I'm lowering the price of your computer, and you can keep your money. You don't have to come back and buy more stuff. You can spend that money however you want."

"But you're supposed to give me a gift card!"

"Look... if you want, I can put a $100 gift card on the tab. I have no problem doing that. You'd still be paying the $599 in the ad."

"But it's supposed to be FREE!"

"It is! The computer is $599 either way. You can either take the computer as it is, with no gift card, for $599, or you can take the computer and a $100 gift card, for $599. It's $599 either way. It's just that, since I've been having this trouble, I'm giving you a third option... just take the $100 off the top. Most customers would rather that anyway, since it's less money out of their pocket in the first place."

    "So, it's $499?"

    "Yes."

"But the gift card is supposed to be free..."
