Do not attack the L1 reps regarding a critical case that you could have and should have worked then threaten them with a call to their manager. Especially when our documentation is in order and you've yet to touch the case which is your responsibility. We're just trying to be nice and help you so you don't have to interrupt that game of Solitaire.

You know things are not good when half the helpdesk staff are actively looking for a new job. I'm expecting a mass exodus this year from the helpdesk and I may be part of it.

Comments Have they taken official notice, yet? Bringing around 'coffee,' and the like? -LDFeral LD: they haven't done anything like that yet since only 1 person has left...and he was the bosses favorite. If 2-3 more go then I'd expect panic/meetings/bribe for us to stay. - Starfury You don't happen to work for Army Enterprise Service Desk do you? They started that "service" last October and have realized it's failure and it's closeing this May. - ravensentinel |

Open letter to all the speed demons on the road with me during the storm in St. Louis last night: If it's raining so hard that visibility is near zero even with the wipers on max... SLOW THE HELL DOWN! I'm going 25 mph for a reason, and running up on my back bumper won't make me go any faster.

Comments GO FASTER. No need not to go the speed limit. You don't have to worry about rain. It fun to drive in. - DarkRookie I was in a rainstorm like that last week. And we were slowed down to 20 (in a 50 zone) due to extremely limited visibility. We got home and didn't leave. -OgdenTechGuy In BC you can get a speeding ticket if you are driving at the speed limit in that sort of nonsense. The speed limit is a maximum, and weather conditions reduce it... which does mean that it's the cop's judgment as to what constitutes a "safe speed". So kind of a mixed blessing... -chazz You don't need coffee when driving like that in the streaming rain. The adrenaline rush from nearly meeting your maker is a good enough wake up - AdmiralLaurie Huh. If it's that bad I just kick on my overhead lights and *force* people to slow down. - RiffRaff Had a snow storm like that the other day. T'was not fun. Specially since the night before it had rained so the roads were already slick. The snow made them slushy. Grr... - Aelin236 I remember a while back there was a snow storm, and I could barely see a foot past my headlights, so I (as well as most other people) were driving down the Interstate at 5-10 MPH. Though there were several large pickups and SUVs that decided they wanted to go the full 75 (or faster). Guess how many wrecked cars were off the side of the road when the storm ended. -linuxmatt And turn your damn headlights on if it's raining or snowing. -thx1138 Last time I got a ticket (for an accident that was my fault) it was for driving in excess of conditions. Conditions were that you couldn't go over 10 mph even though posted limit was 55 mph. -MSimmons777 Here in Cali: max speed law says "maximum safe speed, up to the posted." (Posted is then the maximum maximum?) Headlights: if your wipers are on, your headlights have to be, too - otherwise it's a ticketable offense. Cell phones - don't get me started. Yes, non-hands-free usage is illegal, but hard to enforce as it's a class-2 offense, not one that you can get pulled over for but one you can get ticketed for if pulled over for something else. (And too often ignored.) - Captain Trips I can't think of the number of times I've been on Interstate 10 in New Orleans in fog so thick you could cut it with a butcher knife, and folks are driving 10 miles OVER the Speed Limit. And you wonder why there are so many chain reaction collisions on the bridge between Slidel and New Orleans... -VoiceOfSanity Captain Trips - we've had the wipers on - lights on law here for about 15 years (before that it was just good driving), but they don't seem to enforce it. -thx1138 |

Your time, convenience, and harmony with others means nothing to users, coworkers or spouses….Any request for vacation WILL be an inconvenience no matter how far out you request it (users)….any attempt to ask for a swap of holidays WILL be an inconvenience (coworkers)….any attempt to re-book a vacation house that was reserved without your knowledge because you have been working 3 weeks of 10 hours shifts plus the occasional side contract WILL be met with, ”your family will be on vacation at this time, we hope you will attend.” (spouses)...You are a cog in everyone else’s machine, bound by the glue of duty, responsibility and love…When you ask for a break you’re the jerk…When you finally pass out, you may be mourned but you won’t be missed.

Comments I once had to say "I WILL be on vacation on XX. I will be back on XX. If I don't have a job then, have the pink slip ready on that day." They got the message, and I came back after vacation to a thankful boss. -srteach Whereas our boss gets upset with us if we DON'T take our accumulated PTO. Official company policy: "we give you the PTO for a reason, you need time away from work to be yourself." (We have a pretty good scale, too - you start getting additional PTO each year once you've hit your 3-year anniversary. And if you last to 10 years, you get 5-6 weeks PTO a year. Of course, this Paid Time Off is both sick-leave and vacation.) - Captain Trips Oh, we'll be missed; b/c the cog they rely on isn't there, what'll they do when we're not around to pick up their slack anymore? ;) - MadJack |

The fastest way to get a hold of a user to confirm an appointment to pick up equipment is to close out their work ticket stating "unable to comtact user", and specify dates, times & methods you attempted to contact them. Close it again if they neep "but you never called me!" (especially when you did) or "but I thought it was for something else!"

Comments Works every time! I probably use it at least once a week to get a return phone call. -CelticSkyhawk Oddly, even that doesn't work here. I've closed out tickets only to have the user call or email back like 3 months later to complain that no one ever contacted them about their issue (which had been resolved the whole time, and they never bothered to check). - AmazingKreskin @AK: That happens here too, and the funny thing is, the tickets they submit are critical fills because the equipment "is for patient care" and when they call back 4 or 5 months later wondering why they never got it, we're left to wonder whether that was really the case. - skippytpodar This is something that really pisses me off too. Working on an issue for someone, you either fix it or need the user to test to see if it was actually fixed.... several phone calls or e-mails go unanswered. Finally close the issue and they open another identical one. You explain that you tried to contact them several times about the original issue and their excuse, ready for this? Is: "I get so many e-mails, I don't have time to read them all so I must have missed the ones you sent." Really? Fucking assholes... -JoeLugian Oh, they don't have time to read yours, but they do have time to read the daily joke or other chain mail b.s coming from the desk next door. - AdmiralLaurie Our policy is 3 contact attempts in 48 hrs. If no response: close. If they e-mail in saying "I'll call" and don't..that's a no response and counts against them. - Starfury @Starfury: We have a smiliar three-strikes rule, and the only (very minor) change we have to that is if we've verified through third party sources (secretary, department liason, etc.) that they were legitimately outside the office, like out sick, at a conference, or on vacation. - skippytpodar I suggested an upgrade to our ticketing system wherein the ticket automatically gets closed after 7 days whether I fix it or not. For some reason that idea got shot down - Spyder19 Unless it's actually a genuine email problem, they can have an auto-generated email and like it. And if it's email and corporate, a phone call to their boss counts as a contact. -Geminii I guess I'm pretty lucky. I have closed several problems with 'contacted user, no response assumed fixed' and had nothing come back to bite me on the bum. I do know a few of the help desk guys here quite well, so I guess that helps - PoglaTheGrate |

Useful facts: The lemon law can be invoked regarding faulty computers. (Did not know this until roomie started having trouble with his new computer. Consumer law ftw.)

Comments How about faulty cow-irkers? Faulty managers? -ChildofCthulhu If it were only that easy, Cthulu - skippytpodar For those of us not in your country, can you please clarify what the lemon law is? -Calydor Lemon laws basically say in one way or another that if a new product is returned for defects too often in a specified period of time, then it qualifies as a "lemon," and the consumer has some legal recourse, usually a complete replacement of said object. Was first passed for car dealerships, but has evidently been expanded to other items as well. Mileage may vary per state, of course. - RiffRaff Ah, good ol' Sale of Goods Act. Goods must be "as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality." The Act pins responsibility on the seller, not the manufacturer. If, for example, your £1500 TV fails after 18 months, you could claim that it is not of satisfactory quality and should be repaired/replaced. This is in addition to any manufacturer's warranty :) - smellystudent This is similar to what MS got in trouble for with the Xbox 360, and the good ol RROD failure. It means here in NZ I could still push for repairs at no cost, as its classed as a DVD player, which have expected life of 5 years, failure on mine was after 4 years. I brought a newer one, and repaired the old one myself tho. -ApolloSZ |

Before calling me to complain that your applications won't launch, you will first turn on both monitors.
