Bio: Another vet, another techie since high school, believer in R.A.T before I even heard the term, and wishing we all got paid what we're worth. Big time Scifi fan (like all of us), especially TREK. Think of Catherine Hicks' reply to Spock in TVH: "Who ever said the human race was logical?" Or, from HHGTTG 4 (SL&TFATF): Wonko the Sane, baby! NOTE: The less important the product, the bigger an asshole the customer is!

Hmm. Its where the HEART OF GOLD picked up FORD and ARTHUR ( Infinite Improbability ) - -Darkwing
So many great minds thinking alike. Give us time. -MadJack
In regards to that .wav you mentioned, I'll see what I can do. -hkypipe
Yes, working for Lawyers does suck. I could probable post a brand new story everyday, with the amount of crap I have to put up with. -LawFirmFlunkie
Service tag, hmm, we work for the same company. -HellMan
I asked for the Service Tag, not the Express Service Code! -Scruff
I do not get paid to offer advice on how to fix something, I get paid to fix it. Besides, I don't leave anything out, I just don't go into detail about how to do something. -Ceibo
MADJACK...you and I just became buddies for life homeboy...and you and I are going to write that BIOS login for the basic command TEST and SUBMIT IT TO MR GATES HIMSELF....LMAO....your friend in TREK and TECH crispy -crispy
Thanks for the name idea - I was wondering what to call myself... -Wonko The Sane
Dude, please post a link to the club you were talking about - I can't seem to find it. Thanks... -blackbird1
(Sky42) I work for a company that HP has a contract with. -=Stream=- Perhaps they lied for the hell of it, we get hellabored on the slow days. :) -Sky42
Proudly, loudly, and forever true to it... Vet of the US Air Force, and I still have a tear when I sing the national anthem. We are still here, and we will never forget our fallen or still standing brothers and sisters. -WarTyger
Scruff I like your attitude...I have that same problem not on a daily basis but on an hourly basis. Really gets me sometimes. -TheOperator
So MadJack, don't you just dispise some, if not most, of the calls you get during the day with our lovely Michael Hell Corp? some of them are calassic. I willbe reading some of your stories as you post them, hope you read some of mine to see that you are not the only one that has bad days with Hell -TheOperator
HRBitch? no not me (think about a Blues Brother)... -hkypipe
MadJack, I agree with Capt. Tripp on this one.(Re;Hr Bitch) By the time I checked the Bio, the name had been corrected, But I'm Betting he's dead right. Think about it. Impersonate someone else, write an inflamatory post in their name, and derive pleasure from a group of your peers flaming her down, (And look at the postings, would'nt you say it worked?)at no further effort from you, of course. NOW, having said that, lets discard the grade ten trash talk Idea, (Run with me on this one.) This posting on this particular board is too blatent. We are NOT idiots here, and would eventually see the ridiculousness of the post. This board BELONGs to people of the mind, means, and intelligence to make life 'interesting' for anyone who lives in a computer world. That being said, doesn't this strike you as the cat pissin' on the bed in the dog kennel? So logically, (like I said, run with me on this one) we assume someone is trying to nail 'Cooper' We look to the -obvious- drop, 'Morrison'. I would say he was the target here, not her. And I'm betting neither one of them knows anything about this prior to the post going up. So, the final point in all this rant? Leave it alone. Theres only one thing this post says clearly, and thats 'I'm pissed off, and want someone else to do my dirty work.' Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I really don't think so. -SynSeer
Baseball? BASEBALL? We call it rounders and its played by 8 year old girls.. :) -nomoretears
We are currently on a hiring freeze. Sorry. As for the unemployment, I would contest that info, I think you would probably win. If they cant prove the misconduct was directly related towards your termination, then they have to shell out of the unemployment pool. Pretty much they will crumble if you even try to scare em up. At least it will give you something to do during the day. -psxdefector1
Verklempt is from an old Mike Myers bit on SNL - synonym for misty-eyed... -hkypipe
MadJack, i see you used to work were im still working... do i know you? Did you work on (beep,Beep) or another? -Silkfever
MadJack- you get paid $8/hr to sling bagels? Dude- that's how much I get paid to do Tech Support for AOL!! Pity me! -My Cat Athena
"a believer in R.A.T. before I ever heard the term"?! You've just made my day! :) -mushroom, R.A.T. #2- -Mushroom
Grant Heslov played Faisal in "True Lies" - he's the one who said the line "total pooch-screw", not Tom "I am more than my marriage to Roseanne" Arnold. -notpitr
Madjack- i get ATTBI becuase i live in arlington. I only work and play in dallas area.. =) -Silkfever
A little, teenie, tiny, lost town in NM. -muddogg
Response to: "Did you work at CI/ZDMI in La Jolla a few years ago, say 94-98/99? Your style reminds me of a fellow I knew there." Nope, sorry. Never worked in La Jolla. -notpitr
M.J. no offence intended by that Iwa Jima crack, I was only aluding to the stereotype that oldies always work WWII into every conversation, It was on reflection badly phrased, appologies for any offence caused. -Digital Dogcow
ah haha! another st. ream employee!! finally, i found another one online! which site do you work at?! email me: kraylus@ldsweb.org! -kraylus
I recently heard rumors of hiring another group to hsi techs. We also have other depts like sales, video, telephony etc. It's worth a try. Bear in mind the cost of living here in sd is high and the pay is low. -atomicbill
St.Ream?? I love it!!!! I did time at the Beaverton prison. -MacDaddy
MadJack, if your Advanced Power Management driver isn't properly installed or it's disabled, you will get the shut down message. Check in the device manager, view hidden devices. If it's disabled, enable it. If it's got a bang on it, remove it and reboot, should reinstall auto. -Grembo
3 years USS Ranger...2 years CincUsNav Eur...4+ USNavWarCol,,,E6...Out...1 DOD contract...3 Corporate contractor...Whatever I can get... -Hellion
Well... I AM subscribed to the Techsmoralandmentalsupport club and the *.wav links STILL don't work :( -Wiser
Wow! & I thought I was "a bit ill". Sorry to hear of your woes (medical or otherwise!). I too an ex-forces, but there is no such thing as the VA on this side of the pond....its "tough shit" if you are ex-forces, you get treated like everyone else. Having siad that, no-one goes without healthcare through lack of money - the NHS takes care of that.(Think free doctors vitits/hospital visits)Prescriptions cost a standard charge of approx $9.50 each, be it antibiotics, analgesics or cancer drugs, but if they are given in hospital as opposed to out-patients, they are free. Also, as a diabetic my prescriptions are all free - for diabetes or not - I was spending the equivalent of $30 every two months on blood pressure stuff....not any more! Also any eye/foot checks are now free ('cos of diabetes), otherwise eye tests are about $ 15. Hope you are feeling better soon - feeling ill sucks! -lineswine
Hey Jack. You may have seen this before, (How to Simulate Shipboard Life at Home), but if not check it out. http://www.robertwade.com/shiplife.html -Hellion
I work for CI Host in Bedford. That might be too far for you though. -NinjaTech
this is what was suppose to come up but i was enduring the 4 screaming kids thing at the time. in april of 2001 i sold a system, it was a P1 166, 48 MBram, 2.1 GHD, zipdrive, 24XCD-Rom, 4MB video, sound, nic, monitor, KB and mouse for $225. i even drove an hour away to fix it the first time she dumped the OS, 3 days later she does it again, this time i make her bring it back, i find out its because she is trying to install IE 5.5 on win 95, so i put win 98 on it and it works fine, but crashes more often than win 95 does (most of these only occur when yahoo is running, she ALWAYS! has yahoo open), so anyway out of the blue she messages me on yahoo 2 weeks ago to tell me she talked to a" computer expert who has been repairing pentiums for 25 years(pretty cool eh i thought they had only been around since the beginning of the 90's), anyway, seems this guy told her the system was a piece of crap and i had screwed her and should give her her money back, that it was crashing because its Mhz are wrong, and the HD is smaller than I told her, this goes on for the last 2 weeks, i ask her what she means, so here is what she tells me, when the system starts it says 167 mhz, and in windows it says for the HD 1.98 GB, these are the 2 reason she feels it crashes. finnaly i say bring back the comp and i'll give you your money back! so she refuses to answer, just keeps on bitchin, i try to explain chrystals and clock mulipliers to her, i told her technically a 166 is realy 165, so she told me that was wrong a 166 is a 166, i tried to explain that crystals control the clock speed of the mother board and the cpu is a multiple of the mother board. and the diferance between 1024 and 1000, she just keeps messaging me and bithing about how i ripped her and how i should give her her money back so finnally i said ok fine bring the system back and i'll give you your money back funny thing is she does n -Casca

thing is she does not answer when i say that just keeps on bithing that i should send her the money, so i call this "expert" up, and he tells me she asked about up grading and he told her that she nedded a new tower, PS MOBO CPU and Ram, that she could keep her drives video and sound card and nic, and that he never said any thing about me that she was off on her own about that and then i basically tell her where to go, so she starts trying to prove shes a genius in computers by asking me "who made the first pc, and what did he make it out of?", so i say "IBM in about 1981 out of ciruit boards tin and some other things" she says "you just proved how stupid you are, it was bill gates in 1972 out of wood!" YES INDEED FOLKS bill gates MADE THE FIRST COMPUTER OUT OF WOOD!!!!!, she also went on to tell me bill gates made the Commodore AND the Atari. if any of you need to find out about computers i am sure she would be more than happy to teach you! her user name is hot_carmel_sundae2002 and she LIVES on yahoo. -Casca
Hey, I got that damned net send message crap too. This link can tell you how to stop it http://www.updatexp.com/messenger_service_spam.html but don't use it if you need to receive net send or alerter service messages cause you won't get them. -GargoyleTS
MadJack, You have any experience w/ VTC systems, (Polycom, PictureTel, Tandberg) The reason I ask is that's what I've been doing for the last 4 months, and I get one or two calls a week from people who have seen my resume on Monster. -Hellion
Hey, MJ - give me a shout if you need a couch to crash on......... -notpitr
MadJack, I'm curious: Did you get your nick from your real name, or from Roger Zelazny's "This Mortal Mountain"? Cheers! -CTYankee
"Ah. Not so wounded as we were led to believe. So much the better. " ;0) Good to see one of the old guard back posting again!. WB MJ. -Digital Dogcow
Your employer.... I'm gonna guess a three letter cable company that starts with a C? -ClueBat
MadJack: There's now a TechSongs section, new since you were last around here. Teivrann actually wrote a parody of "I want a new drug" by Huey Lewis and the News, called (natch) "I want a new mouse", and posted it to that section. Well worth a look... -chazz
I lived in NOLA for two years. Saw three Mardi Gras. Will be there next year! -billybien
RE: Your response to "Faith In Humanity" - A-MEN!!! -hkypipe
Do you work for Cox? -atomicbill
MadJ -- (Taking this to your whiteboard, since the original post is getting long and lost in the past.) Yes, absolutly certain of the original Star Wars release date. It came out on May 25 of 1977, you can look it up. Here in town, it was at the Valley Circle Theater (which is now a shoe store in Mission Valley West, right behind the Gordon Biersch Brewery.) The comic books started a couple of months earlier. A friend of mine saw it just a few days after opening. I remember this well, because it was just before I graduated High School, and had just gotten my first car. My friend, my future girlfriend, and I went to see it early in June. I had never before waited in line for two hours to see a movie, and it was worth it. I really would like to know what it was you saw that February, because if it was that month it wasn't Star Wars. Of course, it could have been Feb '78, as I recall the second release was just before then, and it was in THAT release that it was retitled. -Captain Trips
Bwhhahahaha! I thought you'd get a kick out of this. What a farkin Rock! http://starbulletin.com/2004/09/23/news/index2.html -Hellion
SD is a Repugnican city. Which explains why extra help is needed. They don't have a CLUE what's going on outside of their pallacial DelMarsian estates! REF to http://www.techcomedy.com/single/new_stories.php?content_number=39098 -billybien
I see, now I get it sorry about the rubbing it in part. I understand how it is to lose a job to circumstances beyond our control. Its happened to me several times here where I live. Thats also why I strived to package myself in the best way possible so that any future employers would hire me at a rate higher than normal. Truth be told I do have plans of leaving the tech industry and going back to my first love which is cooking. :) But as an observation, I've noticed a lot of Americans moving to my country and getting lots more because of their expertise. you can take it as a suggestion or an invitation but likeI said awhile ago i'm sorry for stepping on your toes :) -CrystalMare
Blame Canada huh?.... -RandalGraves

MJ -- Well, I don't know if I'm leaving or not yet. But...one of our helpdesk guys is leaving, and one of our computer operators is going to fill his slot. Which means we will have an opening in a week or so for an AS400 operator -- and if/when I leave that will increase to two openings. Have any AS400 experience? Or other mini-frame OS? (BTW, I think that what made my manager not consider you was your lack of transportation -- we've had problems in the past with those relying on SD busses. If you've got a car now, they may reconsider.) I'll try to keep you posted. Capt. Trips. -Captain Trips
Docent is a museum term, not a maritime term. -concept14
I give up. Who is "Gary Mitchell" and why have you mentioned him in half your comments lately? -Divinar
FWIW, having to split your posts has nothing to do with whether you're a member or not. IE has limits as to how much text you can submit at a time. If you use another browser, like Firefox or Opera, you can make your posts as long as you want. Membership does allow you to format your posts though. -HidariMak
D00d! Have you tried wild turkey, rare breed? I am friends with and computer guy to the county coroner, and he introduced me to this delicacy. He frequently includes a bottle of it to keep my payment from blowing away. He has his own table at the local outback restaurant, and no visit is complete that doesn't end there. Best.client/friend.ever!! -mwad
I love that Pinky WAV you posted! My wife has been using that one (along with a few others) as a ringtone for quite some time. -missourimule
mj - wasn't there but did a mth on the line in cypress with can forces -rednexxtech
"NOTE: The less important the product, the bigger an asshole the customer is!" my company imports digital cameras for 50 cents per camera, and they then retail for $20. i'm a firm believer in "the cheaper the product (you can argue for putting customer in this spot as well)is, the bigger asshole the customer is. A $20 camera should not be an important product, but would you believe that these people buy these flash-memory cameras for work-related projects? eh...saw your note, had to comment. have good one. -beerman
I don't know too many connected people in San Diego, but if you ever need a referral in the southern part of Orange County (I'm guessing you don't want to move to L.A...) let me know -- I know some people with connections in OC. I have some decent connections in LA myself, although I live in Chicago now. (I'm posting this because your good sense impressed me when I was sober -- and my husband and I are both vets, too.) -ManyHats
When I worked as a machinist we used to have the noobs running around looking for the brass magnet for hours -Grembo
MadJack: you're talking about stationery needs and we should talk to you... does your company handle north of 49 as well? -chazz
Saw your 'spoon-bean' post re "Some Buried Caesar". Question: Have you seen any of the books in current print? I'm haunting the local used bookshops to fill out my collection (only 25 or so of the books so far) -CTYankee
Heh, a person or two work for the big S. Someone even did time at the B location in PNW. I'm doing time there myself, for the time being. As far as I care to go publicly here. I need my job at the current moment in time. -fantacmet

sorry, I didn't mean to steal vapid from you! I forgot you posted it first, but in our office, we have an ongoing joke about intellectually vapid people! :) -shellir05
Excuse me while I whip this <Blazing Saddles reference> out. Love it! -Ramblin
Where do you work? Maybe I can compare prices and shit like that, recommend your services to the boss and earn brownie points if I get the job. -exzyle2k
Hey there - feel free to use the tagline, I figure if it gives amusement, it's done its work *grin* -teivrann
Jakie doll, I read your stories and cringe. And then I wonder how much you drink. Your starfish are worse than mine! -thatgirl
Thanks muchly! I'm super psyched to be diagnosed with this particular flavor of insanity. There's nothing quite like the gathering of tech-minded peoples to snicker at and harass fishies. And oh, how they deserve the ridicule. -QuijanasMadness
MadJack, just saw your NW quote. Here's a soft pitch <grin>: "I love my country because it is mine." hint: "Well, then, I'll go to Hell." & fool grouse -CTYankee
per your comment "Some of the companies I've worked for, I can sympathize. Tech support for appliances. Like having tech support for cds (remember my post about that a few years ago?). Then, I stop and think about a gomerette I was unfortunate enough to have cross my queue during my tenure w/ AAFES 4.5 yrs back who didn't understand why her bed didn't come with a mattress & box spring included. She could have been calling for 'how-to' tech support for her bed, I suppose.... " my story in the break room, about ach pee's, aafes is where I got it. -SGTARKyTEK
Glad to know you're out of harm's way from the fires; I was concerned when I realized I hadn't seen a post from you since last week. Hope you stay okay --- my sister's family lives in Lakeside and they've already packed in case they have to evacuate. -MeanDean
Happy Birthday a day late sorry about the lateness hugs i hope you had a good day -HairTech
MadJack-Perhaps you didn't notice BUT this was a NON TECHNICAL post to begin with so I made my NON TECHNICAL COMMENTS AND you peckerheads start pileing on the believer...that's fine I can take it and dish it out, but it appears that yous got um feewings huwt and started using gutter language to try to prove some point that escapes me because of your foul language. If you wish a lecture then try a lesson in correspondence without vulgarity. -HuhWhazzat
Wow, I never thought so many people missed me! Waddaya say we get a SD BBQ going sometime this summer? -billybien
Ubuntu has pretty good ripping apps, if you're into A/V tech. You can actually download your own audio/video editing studio FOR FREE! There is a repository of free apps for whatever you want to do. I'm not a guru yet, in fact I was never too brilliant in Wind-Doh!'s either. In three weeks of geeking out on Linux,I've managed to compress all of my DVD's and music onto 150 Gig HDD and still have room to record TV. NO DRM EITHER!!! I don't see why people think it's so difficult. -billybien
Yeah, dude. getting sick of these fucking people setting fires. Rather be here than Baltimore, though! -billybien

Hey, I added you on lj as a friend as Lady_hellraiser. I responded to a few of your entries, too. have a good evening, and probably a good day tomorrow, depending on when you see this message. -AdmiralLaurie
If you are serious about a career in voice-over, let me know. The class is about $800, and about the same to produce a demo disk (believe me, you can't do this on your own. But $1600 to start a new career ain't bad.) I'll direct you to the school I used, the only one in town for this which is actually state-acredited! -Captain Trips
You kind of have my locale goal in a few years once I get some letters after my name lol. Is it hard finding work out there? -Kiddingme
MJ, "Too much time on my hands" perhaps, but I only had to copy & paste from something I already had. I forgot I had a list until I read an earlier post complaining about a smiley in support notes. At least I didn't attempt to post ASCII art ZGB. 8) -AussieFoot
Sam Kinison on grilled cheese. Fucking classic!!! -burrkiss
