The Discworld character you're thinking of is Sergeant Detritus, the troll. It takes him a while to master saluting, and when your hand is a vast slab of rock, getting it wrong is quite dangerous. I saw your post about Germany. in 1998, I spent six months in Poland. Not only is the drinking age (as you may guess) 18, but the beer there is incredibly inexpensive. A quart of excellent beer set me back about $1.25, maybe $1.50, so my friends and I there had a grand old time. It was the best college semester of my life! -elcapitane
