Bio: I'm a Network Administrator for a small ISP. I work with Windows, FreeBSD, LINUX, and lots of really stupid customers. 10% of what I do is researching new technologies and applying them, 10% is troubleshooting our network infrastructure and 80% is babysitting problem servers and employees. (Sigh) At least I don't have to take calls from customers very often.

Scoob, my ISP kinda uses dialup as a backup service, though they do sell it as a main service to poor bastards like myself. Their big moneymaker is wireless broadband, which I wish they'd install out here. I am just a mile or two outside the radio footprint of their nearest tower... my entire community is without broadband, and they would make a killing if they'd just find a place to put up an antenna. Being that we're in the foothills of the Rockies doesn't help that part of things, though.. -Jay911

Hi ... I took out a free membership specifically to ask you to delete or edit the one-word comment you posted on the above mentioned article. Most browsers are unable to split that very long word and so they expand the width of their window to accomodate it. Result? You'd need a monitor about five feet wide to get rid of the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the screen. That means *everybody* must scroll their browser window left and right to be able to read the site, which is really very inconvenient. -DelComment
WTF? Sorry, you can't delete comments, just posts. If you want it deleted, you'll have to get the person who posted the story to delete the entire story. The whole point of the comment was designed to highlight the fact that the story had a long string in it that forced you to scroll.

Gecko decided to whine and bitch because Otto, being rather poor right now and in the middle of a lawsuit, asked K1W1, who agreed, to post a song. Gecko compared it to welfare. However, because I know Otto personally, I can truly say he's a really hard worker who just got stuck at a really crappy job; he basically had the choice to buy a star or pay bills. Bills kind of come first, at least in my own thoughts, but apparently not Gecko's as Gecko continued it by telling him to work instead of read TSC; Otto reads TSC at work and posts from work between calls. As a result, since Otto is a friend in reality, not just here, I bought his star for him so that Gecko can't give him a hard time about stars. -taieena

Sounds like your office mate has a Nextel phone. Those make that nice interference near ANY RF-sensitive unshielded device. AT&T Wireless old-style (and some new) phones will set off radar detectors just before they ring. That was actually useful, it gave me time to turn down the stereo before answering the phone. -Grue

I agree with the lack of choice, but at the same time, it's nice for an ISP to keep tabs on their outgoing mail usage. It's a win/lose situation. Actually, we just let the boss know we were tired of walking him through everything and he just was not learning. She knows we don't complain just to complain and she also knows we do whatever we can to resolve "issues" before she has to offically step in. Like I said, a great boss. She trusts us and we know she will do what she can to "protect" us from the higher ups. Well sorry about it, but I have no control over starfish migratory patterns. I guess ever since Ah-nold was elected and Bush re-elected, all the predominatly democrat districts(exept Marin) decided that it was enough. As you may recall, you suggested a PPTP connection as a VPN to allow sharing files. This was a great idea, and works perfectly, but I can't get to the internet through the PPTP tunnel. That is, though I can access my own internal network, I can't access the internet. You said you had a similar config. Any help would be appreciated.

Where we live (Indiana) you can get canned for wearing the wrong shade of lipstick. It's an 'at will' state. One of only 3 left in the union.
